I Fell Asleep

I Fell Asleep

(Mike McCornack – June 29, 2021)

I fell asleep when I should have been writing this song,
And so there’s stuff missing,
Like what it’s about, and where the plot’s going,
And most of the rhymes, like the one that goes here.
And you’d think that my dreams would have been inspiration
But they didn’t help out in this situation.
So it’s probably best if I give up on writing
This song, and go back to my nap.

Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod.
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod.

I fell asleep when I should have been writing this song,
And now I’ve got problems,
Like ink on my pants and a crease on my cheekbone
A really sore neck, and some drool on my page.
My leg is asleep and my pen’s on the floor,
My paper is crinkled and the words are a blur.
So it’s probably best if I give up on writing
This song, and go back to my nap.

Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,

I fell asleep when I should have been writing this song,
And now it’s past lunchtime,
And I’m feeling grumpy, and hungry and drowsy,
And lazy and useless, and songless and lousy,
And ancient and stiff, out of step with the mainstream
Of popular culture, and what people like.
So it’s probably best if I give up on writing
This song, and go back to my nap.

Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
Scribble, nod; scribble, scribble nod,
