Will the Penguins Remember Us

Will The Penguins Remember Us?

(Mike McCornack) (version 2 – March 2020)

Lately I’ve wondered if we’ve done our part,
To care for this planet and honor its worth.
There’s been some unraveling, and we’ve seen the start,
Of signs our inaction is harming the earth.

Will the penguins remember us after we’re gone?
Or be anxious to put those bad memories behind?
Will they ask why we blindly kept puffing along?
Will the penguins remember us after we’re gone?

When the polar bears gather, just chewing the fat,
Will they fondly remember when seasons would change?
The ice floes, the hunting, the great bounty that
Just seems like a myth to the few who remain.

[chorus]

[bridge]
And if the apocalypse gets us at last,
Will there even be anyone left to recall?
The Garden of Eden, our bountiful past
Tornadoes of fire that ended it all…

When the cockroach is master of our old domain,
Will they thank us for dawdling when we had our chance,
To fend off disaster from fire and from rain,
And rejoin the music of nature’s great dance.

[chorus]

Will the penguins remember us after we’re gone?
Or be anxious to put those bad memories behind?
Will they shout out “good riddance!” as they march along?
Will the penguins remember us after we’re gone?
